GFA directs WPL, DOL teams to observe minute’s silence for Nana Pooley

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has instructed that a minute’s silence be observed before the start of all Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Division One League (DOL) matches this weekend in memory of Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley.

Pooley tragically passed away last weekend during a Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Kronmansah Park. He was stabbed by an unknown assailant, a heartbreaking incident that has deeply affected the football community and led to the suspension of the Ghana Premier League.

In honor of Pooley, all players and match officials in the upcoming Division One League and Women’s Premier League games are requested to wear black armbands and observe a minute of silence before kick-off.

The GFA has issued the following statement: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) extends its Compliment.

In honor of the memory of Francis Frimpong aka Nana Pooley, all DOL, WPL players and match officials are hereby requested to wear a black armband and observe a minute of silence before the kick-off of all matches scheduled this weekend. We appreciate your cooperation in paying tribute to a passionate fan of our game,” the statement ended. Additionally, the Ghana FA held a meeting with all 18 Ghana Premier League clubs on Thursday, February 6, 2025, to address the tragic event.

During this meeting, the clubs unanimously agreed to implement enhanced match-day security measures. These protocols were further reviewed in an Executive Council meeting on Friday, February 7, 2025, and detailed guidelines will be announced prior to the resumption of the Premier League season.

The clubs have committed to collaborating with the Ghana FA, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that those responsible for the crime are brought to justice. Their shared goal is to create a safe and enjoyable environment for fans while fostering respect, fair play, and the continued growth of Ghanaian football.

In honour of the memory of Francis Frimpong aka Nana Pooley, all DOL, WPL players and match officials are hereby requested to wear a black armband and observe a minute of silence before the kick-off of all matches scheduled this weekend.
