By Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s former Vice President, emphasized the crucial role of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in driving Africa’s survival and prosperity in the 21st century, while speaking at Harvard University. He noted that Africa missed out on the first three industrial revolutions and risks being left behind if it doesn’t capitalize on the opportunities presented by the 4IR.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the importance of embracing digital technologies to transform Africa’s economies and ensure prosperity. He cited Ghana’s digitalization efforts, such as the National Identification Card (Ghana Card), Digital Address System, and Mobile Money Interoperability Platform, as examples of initiatives that have improved governance, service delivery, and financial inclusion.
The 4IR presents numerous opportunities for Africa, including leveraging digital technologies to drive economic growth, improve healthcare, and enhance education. However, it also poses challenges, such as the need for infrastructure development, skills training, and addressing issues of inequality and job displacement.
Overall, Dr. Bawumia’s emphasis on the importance of the 4IR for Africa’s development aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which recognizes the role of science, technology, and innovation in driving Africa’s transformation.
