President Mahama could face impeachment for sacking appointees

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, a former Majority Leader of Parliament and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, has warned that President Mahama could face impeachment over his decision to dismiss public sector workers appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, these workers were lawfully appointed by the former president, and their dismissal without justified reason would be a violation of the constitution.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that President Mahama swore an oath to uphold the constitution, and by disregarding it, he would be liable for removal from office. He cited Article 191, which states that a member of the public service shall not be dismissed, removed from office, or demoted without just cause.

This development has sparked concerns about the potential consequences of President Mahama’s actions and the implications for Ghana’s political landscape.

President Mahama’s decision to sack public sector workers appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sparked controversy, with Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu warning that it could lead to impeachment. According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the dismissals violate the constitution, which states that public service workers can only be dismissed with just cause.

This development has significant implications for Ghana’s political landscape, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold. Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on February 12, 2025, the former Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region stressed that such dismissals would be unconstitutional unless justified.

You see, the president swore an oath to uphold the constitution. If a former president followed constitutional procedures to appoint workers, and when you assume office, you disregard the constitution and act against it, then you have violated the oath you swore.
