Minority accuses National Security of stealing GH¢10,000 and jewellery in raid on former BoG Governor’s home

The Minority in Parliament has accused National Security operatives of taking GH¢10,000 in cash. They also allegedly took valuable jewellery belonging to the wife of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Ernest Addison. This incident occurred during a raid on his residence.

The operation took place on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. It was reportedly conducted by armed National Security operatives. Some of them were masked and wielding guns. Witnesses say the operatives overpowered private security personnel before conducting a search of the property.

On Thursday, March 20, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the media. He condemned the security operation and described it as “lawless.” He viewed it as an act of intimidation against former appointees of ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“This is unprecedented in our country’s history. A governor of the central bank has never been subjected to such treatment. Unfortunately, GH¢10,000 placed on his bed went missing after the raid,” Afenyo-Markin alleged. “The governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces were also taken.”

He further suggested that some operatives might be underpaid and using such raids as opportunities to loot valuables.

The Minority Leader called on President John Dramani Mahama to take action. He described a pattern of intimidation targeting political opponents. This occurred after a change in government.

“Your Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, let this be a turning point. End this cycle of intimidation and abuse of power,” he urged.

The Minority also criticised the recent arrest of former radio and television host, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. They condemned the action by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB). It was described as another example of political harassment.
