Nigerian social commentator Reno Omokri is raising eyebrows—and questions—over the growing hype surrounding Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
In a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter), Omokri claimed that the widely shared videos of Traoré speaking fluent English and sounding inspirational are “AI-generated,” arguing that the military ruler doesn’t actually speak English fluently and avoids interviews to keep up the image.
“How can you believe he’s paid off all of Burkina Faso’s debt and is now building free houses?” Reno asked. “The country’s debt has actually increased.”
Omokri backed his claims with data, saying Burkina Faso’s debt is now about 65% of its GDP, with around $6 billion owed to foreign lenders—worse off than Nigeria and Ghana. He didn’t stop there.
He also accused Traoré’s regime of silencing journalists, jailing those who try to question official narratives, and feeding propaganda to the rest of Africa. He name-dropped journalists like Guezouma Sanogo, Luc Pagbelguem, and Boukari Ouoba as victims of this crackdown.
Omokri challenged his followers to fact-check him, pointing out that Burkina Faso was ranked the most insecure country on Earth in the 2025 Global Terror Index—second year in a row.
