Notorious Car-Theft Syndicate Busted in Kumasi

A major breakthrough was achieved by the Ghana Police Service following the arrest of several individuals linked to a notorious car-theft syndicate in Kumasi. The group had been operating across the Ashanti Region, targeting unsuspecting victims who had withdrawn large sums of money from banks.

Surveillance and Intelligence Led to the Arrests

Through coordinated efforts by the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Intelligence Video Surveillance (IVS) system, the suspects were tracked and apprehended. Their movements had been monitored for weeks before the operation was executed on June 19, 2025.

Key Suspects Taken Into Custody

Three primary suspects—Russell Ekenze, Francis Friday, and Linus Agwazie—were arrested during the operation. Additionally, two women, Gifty Ozurumbam and Gladys Ibrahim, were taken into custody for allegedly obstructing police investigations.

Tools and Vehicles Were Recovered

During the arrest, two Toyota Highlander vehicles believed to have been used in the crimes were impounded. A 6-inch T-shaped metal tool, suspected to be a master key, was also retrieved from one of the vehicles.

Modus Operandi of the Syndicate

According to police reports, victims were followed from financial institutions and targeted once they parked their vehicles. The thefts were carried out swiftly, often in busy areas such as Ahodwo, KNUST, and Tafo Pankrono.

High-Value Thefts Were Committed

Several high-profile thefts have been attributed to the syndicate. For instance, GH¢107,000 was stolen at ADB Bank in Ahodwo, while GH¢95,000 was taken from a vehicle parked near Tafo Pankrono. These incidents were executed with alarming precision.

A Key Suspect Remains at Large

Despite the arrests, one major suspect, Cosmas Maduabuchukwu, managed to escape. Although he sustained gunshot wounds during an attempted arrest, he has not yet been located. A manhunt has been launched to track him down.

Public Reassurance Was Issued

In a press briefing, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted. He emphasized that the police remain committed to dismantling organized crime networks in the region.

Community Support Was Encouraged

Furthermore, residents have been urged to report suspicious activity, especially around banks and parking areas. The police believe that community vigilance will play a crucial role in preventing future incidents.

A Strong Message Was Sent

Ultimately, the arrests have sent a strong message to criminal networks operating in Kumasi. With investigations still ongoing, the Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring public safety and justice.
