Revocation of appointments has caused uncertainty in the midwifery community – UPNMG

The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG) is urging newly posted nurses and midwives to remain calm after the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) issued a directive revoking all appointments and recruitments made after December 7, 2024.

The decision has left many affected nurses and midwives uncertain about their employment, especially those who received financial clearance in June 2024 but are yet to be placed on the government payroll.

“Understandably, this development has caused anxiety among our junior colleagues and the broader nursing and midwifery community.”

“The UPNMG wishes to assure all newly posted nurses and midwives that we are actively engaging with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and other key authorities, to gain clarity on the implementation of this directive and advocate for the best possible outcome for our members,” the UPNMG stated in a release.

Concerns are growing over job security and the broader impact on the healthcare system.

Health professionals worry that revoking these appointments could worsen staffing shortages in hospitals and clinics, further straining Ghana’s healthcare system.

UPNMG has urged all affected nurses and midwives to stay patient as talks continue.

The union remains committed to defending the rights and welfare of nurses and midwives and will provide updates as new developments emerge.
